Why some electricians are refusing to install plug-in solar in the UK
There has been a lot of talk recently about electricians refusing to install plug-in solar systems because there is still not enough clear guidance.
As an electrician, I think this is being misunderstood. Most electricians are not against plug-in solar. They are worried about what they are being asked to take responsibility for before the UK has a clear, practical and legally robust installation route.
Important: plug-in solar in the UK is still a developing area. Product standards, DNO requirements, wiring guidance and consumer advice can change quickly.
This page is my plain-English explanation of why some electricians are cautious. It is not legal advice, installation instruction or a substitute for manufacturer instructions, BS 7671, DNO guidance or site-specific advice from a competent person.
Quick answer: why are electricians refusing plug-in solar?
Some electricians are refusing to install plug-in solar because they do not feel the UK guidance is clear enough yet.
The concern is not simply that plug-in solar is dangerous. The concern is that once an electrician gets involved, they may be expected to take responsibility for more than just the solar panel and inverter.
They may need to think about the existing socket circuit, the age of the wiring, the consumer unit, earthing, RCD or RCBO protection, bidirectional current, DNO notification, product standards, labelling, isolation and what happens if something goes wrong later.
The real question for an electrician is not “does the solar kit work?” It is “what exactly am I certifying, and how far does my responsibility go?”
Until that is clear, I completely understand why some electricians are saying no or waiting for better guidance.
Electricians are not necessarily against plug-in solar
I think this is the bit that gets lost in the headlines.
A lot of electricians are not against the idea of small solar kits. Many of us can see the benefit. A simple, affordable solar setup could help renters, people in flats, people with garages, people with small gardens and homeowners who cannot afford a full rooftop solar installation.
The problem is that electricians are trained to think about risk. If we connect something, alter something or say something is safe, we are putting our name and reputation behind it.
With a normal rooftop solar installation, the industry already has established design methods, installation routes, certification processes and paperwork. Plug-in solar is different because it is trying to use an existing socket circuit in a way most UK homes were never originally designed for.
My view:
Plug-in solar should not be dismissed, but it also should not be rushed. The UK needs a clear route that protects customers, electricians, manufacturers and the electricity network.
Why plug-in solar is different from plugging in a normal appliance
The name “plug-in solar” makes it sound like plugging in a kettle, toaster or phone charger.
But electrically, it is not the same thing.
A kettle takes power from the house. A plug-in solar microinverter can put power back into the house wiring.
A proper microinverter should have anti-islanding protection, grid monitoring and automatic shutdown if the mains supply fails. That is a major safety feature, and it is one reason modern microinverters are far more advanced than many people realise.
But even with those protections, it is still generation equipment connected to an existing electrical installation. That is why electricians are asking for proper guidance.
The existing UK wiring is the big unknown
One of the biggest concerns is not the solar panel itself. It is the condition of the existing electrical installation.
UK homes vary massively. Some have modern consumer units with RCBO protection and recently tested circuits. Others have old wiring, damaged sockets, poor connections, mixed alterations, poor DIY work or circuits that have not been inspected for decades.
If a plug-in solar kit is connected to a poor circuit, the solar kit may get blamed for a problem that was already there.
This is where electricians get nervous. Are they expected to inspect the whole circuit before saying the plug-in solar system is suitable? Should they carry out an EICR? Should they only inspect the socket? What if the customer refuses extra checks because they thought it was meant to be “plug and play”?
This is the uncomfortable truth:
Plug-in solar may be simple for the customer, but the electrician still has to think like an electrician. Existing wiring condition, protective devices and circuit suitability cannot just be ignored.
Ring final circuits make the UK more complicated
A lot of UK homes use ring final circuits for sockets. This is one reason we cannot just copy what other countries have done without thinking it through properly.
In many European countries, socket circuits are often radial circuits. The design assumptions are different.
With UK ring circuits, electricians need to think about how current flows around the circuit, whether the ring is complete, whether there are spurs, whether connections are loose, whether protective devices are suitable and whether generation could affect the way the circuit is loaded.
This does not mean plug-in solar cannot work on UK socket circuits. It means the guidance needs to be written for UK wiring, not simply imported from countries with different electrical systems.

What are electricians worried about?
From an electrician’s point of view, these are the questions that matter:
- Is the socket circuit actually suitable for generation?
- Is the ring final circuit complete and in good condition?
- Are there any damaged sockets, loose terminals or overloaded spurs?
- Is the consumer unit suitable?
- Is the RCD or RCBO suitable for bidirectional current?
- Is the earthing arrangement suitable?
- Does the product meet the correct UK standards?
- Has the DNO been notified correctly under G98 where required?
- Are the manufacturer instructions clear?
- Who is liable if the customer later moves the kit to another socket?
None of these are silly objections. These are normal questions that come up when new technology is added to existing electrical installations.
The liability problem
This is probably the biggest reason some electricians are refusing to get involved.
If an electrician installs or signs off a plug-in solar system, they may be seen as the professional who approved the installation. If there is a future problem, they may be asked why they allowed it.
That becomes difficult if the industry has not clearly defined what the electrician is supposed to inspect.
For example, if an electrician checks the socket and installs the kit, but does not carry out a full EICR, are they responsible if an old fault exists elsewhere on the circuit? If they do carry out a full inspection, does the customer understand why the job is no longer a cheap plug-and-play install?
This is why clearer guidance matters.
Good guidance should protect customers, but it should also protect electricians from being blamed for unclear rules or poor-quality products.
Does this mean plug-in solar is unsafe?
No. I do not think that is the right conclusion.
A correctly designed plug-in solar system, using compliant equipment and connected to a suitable installation, could be a very useful product.
The issue is not that every plug-in solar system is unsafe. The issue is that the UK needs a safe, repeatable and understandable route for ordinary people to use them.
That means clear product standards, proper manufacturer instructions, simple DNO processes, sensible electrical checks and honest marketing.
The industry has been through similar learning curves before with EV chargers, battery storage, heat pumps and smart energy equipment. At first there are always questions. Then the standards improve, electricians get clearer guidance and the market becomes more confident.
What homeowners should do before buying plug-in solar
If you are thinking about buying a plug-in solar kit, I would not rush into it just because a product looks cheap online.

Understand DNO notification

Think about the condition of your wiring
If your home is older, the consumer unit is dated, sockets are damaged or the wiring has not been tested for years, an electrical inspection may be sensible before connecting generation equipment.

Do not ignore protective devices
RCDs, RCBOs and bidirectional current are not exciting topics, but they matter. Some protective devices may not be suitable for current flowing in both directions.

Buy proper equipment, not mystery kits
Avoid cheap imported kits with poor documentation, unclear standards or no UK support. Look for proper manufacturer information, clear inverter certification and sensible installation instructions.

Why this could actually be good for plug-in solar
It might sound negative when electricians refuse to install something, but in the long run this could actually help plug-in solar.
If electricians, industry bodies and consumers push for proper guidance now, the final result should be safer and more trusted.
The worst outcome would be a rushed rollout where poor-quality kits get sold, customers misunderstand the rules and electricians are left trying to clean up the mess.
A better outcome is clear guidance, proper standards, simple notification, decent products and realistic advice for homeowners.
My honest opinion:
Plug-in solar has a future in the UK, but only if it is treated seriously. It should not be overhyped as a magic plug-and-play product that ignores electrical safety.
Should you be worried if an electrician says no?
Not necessarily.
If an electrician refuses to install plug-in solar, it does not automatically mean the product is dangerous or your idea is bad.
It may simply mean they are not comfortable taking responsibility until the guidance is clearer.
That is a professional decision. Electricians are allowed to say no to work they do not feel confident certifying.
What I would avoid is trying to find someone who will say yes without asking any questions. A good electrician should ask questions about the circuit, consumer unit, product, location, DNO process and manufacturer instructions.
What I think the UK needs next
For plug-in solar to properly work in the UK, I think we need:
- A clear product standard for approved plug-in solar kits.
- Plain-English consumer guidance that normal homeowners can understand.
- A simple DNO notification route for very small systems.
- Clear rules on socket connection, dedicated circuits and installation limits.
- Practical guidance for electricians on what must be inspected.
- Clear labelling and manufacturer instructions.
- Honest advertising that does not pretend every home is automatically suitable.
If those things happen, I think electricians will become more comfortable with the technology.

I do not see electricians refusing plug-in solar as a sign that the technology has failed.
I see it as a sign that the UK needs clearer guidance before expecting electricians to put their name to installations.
Plug-in solar could become a really useful option for many households, especially people who cannot install a full rooftop system. But it needs to be introduced properly.
If the industry gets the standards, DNO process, consumer guidance and installation requirements right, plug-in solar could become normal in the UK. If it is rushed, it risks creating confusion, poor installations and mistrust.
My final view:
Electricians are not the enemy of plug-in solar. Good electricians are asking the questions that need answering before this becomes mainstream.
